The Mastery of the Three-Shuttle Korvai
What sets an authentic Kanchipuram saree apart from all other silks is the Korvai technique. The border and body are woven separately and interlocked thread-by-thread with interlocking zigzag jointures. Two weavers sit side by side at the pit loom, throwing shuttles in perfect sync to produce contrasting borders of unmatched strength.
Gold Zari and Sacred Motifs
Every motif carries sacred iconography: the Malli Moggu (jasmine bud), the Mayil (peacock), the Rudraksha, and the temple gopuram spires. Woven with pure silver threads dipped in 24-carat gold, these sarees were originally created as offerings to temple deities before becoming the quintessential South Indian wedding heirloom.
