Indigo is one of the oldest dyes known to humankind. Unlike chemical pigments that coat the exterior of threads, natural indigo bonds chemically with the cellulose of natural cotton in a living, breathing fermentation vat.
The Living Fermentation Vat
An indigo vat is alive. It contains natural yeasts, jaggery, lime, and crushed Indigofera tinctoria leaves. When the yarn is submerged into the vat, it emerges a yellowish-green. Only when oxygen in the air touches the wet fibers does it miraculously turn deep midnight blue before your eyes.
The Patina of Time
Chemically dyed blue fades into a dull grey. Natural indigo, however, wears into a beautiful, nuanced oceanic gradient. As you wash and wear it, the textile tells the story of your life, deepening in character with every passing season.
A machine weaves a thousand meters of uniform cloth a day. An artisan weaves two, infusing each warp and weft with human breath, prayer, and living geography.
